Germany: a combination of several good things
Germany is renowned for its quality, precision and efficiency, combined in an impressive formula rarely seen elsewhere. In almost all sectors, there is at least one German product that outperforms all others and represents the niche of the sector. The products of SAP, Audi, BMW, Daimler, Siemens, Adidas, Bosch, Miele, Audi are just a few examples of the German obsession with perfectionism. In this country, which has been the birthplace of many sciences, technologies, inventions and innovations, you never run out of impressive surprises.
Nevertheless, these successes have long overshadowed one of the most impressive achievements of Germany, its health system. This system that provides quality health care for 100% of a population exceeding 80 million people in one of the most egalitarian from, mankind has ever known, is a real miracle.
The health system in Germany is universal and is based on the obligation that every citizen has health insurance. Germany is one of the countries that spends more money on the health of its citizens and where life expectancy is one of the highest on the planet. Health is simply a universal right and a priority for the ordinary citizen as well as for the public policy.
Apart from the material resources, it is the quality of the women and the men – the health care professionals – whose dedication, competencies and professionalism that makes the German health services unique and adorable. The universality and consistency of these qualities all over healthcare institutions reveals the common factor, the educational system of health professionals.
Beyond the local pleas for improvement, this system enjoys many impressive features that are worth learning. Practicality, pragmatism, concentration on development of skills and competencies, strong ties between education and professional practice, churching of human aspects of healthcare, orientation towards care outcomes and focus on overall positive therapeutic experience by the patients are some of these characteristics.
Though the context is different, we have in the College of Health Sciences a strong inclination towards the basic values and concepts underpinning the German educational system of health professionals. Thanks to the close cooperation of our German partners, we have managed to go a long way of reform of our academic programs and learning approaches. Today, we can confidently and proudly say that we build future health professionals … the German way.
