DESCRIPTION OF THE PROGRAM
The midwife is a highly trained professional who provides counseling and care during pre-conception, pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period.
During pregnancy the midwife is qualified to provide antenatal care, which is the routine health control of presumed healthy pregnant women for prevention, early detection and management of diseases or pregnancy complications throughout the course of the pregnancy while promoting healthy lifestyles that benefit both the mother and the child. When complications arise, the midwife refers the pregnant woman to a doctor who is trained to deal with special situations.
The midwife also supervises normal delivery. Her role includes helping and supporting the pregnant woman to give birth in the way that she likes, while monitoring her and the baby’s health. In case the midwife feels concerned at any point that things are not progressing normally, she liaises with medical staff.
After birth, the midwife provides postnatal care to the mother and the newborn, educates the mother on contraception and breast feeding and help the mother assumes her new role. The midwife also provides family-centered primary healthcare to women throughout their reproductive lives.
This program is tailored to equip you with knowledge, skills and attitudes that will make you a competent midwife. Preparing you to become a midwife goes through three phases in the College of Health Sciences.

This program is tailored to equip you with knowledge, skills and attitudes that will make you a competent midwife. Preparing you to become a midwife goes through three phases in the College of Health Sciences.
The first phase is dedicated to the acquisition of basic knowledge in biomedical sciences pertinent to the profession of nursing and midwifery. You will develop a large base of knowledge on anatomy physiology, biochemistry, pathology, microbiology, pharmacology and psychology.
A special emphasis is placed on the anatomy and physiology of the reproductive system of women, physiology of the fetus, embryology and biology of labor and delivery. You will also master a wide range of clinical and patient care skills.
The second phase includes modules directly related to professional practice (obstetrics, birth preparation, gynecology, child care, pediatrics). In addition, this phase allows students to acquire the knowledge and basic skills in emergency medicine, intensive care and obstetric surgical nursing.
The clinical internships during this phase aimed at building your capacity to provide general nursing care to adults and. Further, a great deal of clinical training is dedicated to care of the normal pregnancy, the normal childbirth and the normal newborn.
The third phase of the training focuses on the diagnosis and management of obstetric pathologies, complications of childbirth and neonatal disorders. The clinical internships are directed towards comprehensive care of women with high-risk pregnancies, management of childbirth complications and abnormalities, obstetric surgeries, obstetric intensive care and neonatal intensive care.
The job outlook after graduation is very bright. There is a general shortage of midwives in Morocco and worldwide. The shortage is particularly profound in rural and remote areas, where obstetricians are also scarce.
We have designed the course in a way that offers you the most interactive, informal and encouraging environment conducive to learning. You will be encouraged to think critically, to seek knowledge yourself and to translate theory into practice.
Our curriculum is based on the art and science of helping you learn. The principles of our educational philosophy are that you are a self-directed learner, have rich experiences and knowledge on which to draw and desire to learn to better handle real-life situations. In this regard we see education as a process that builds up competence and leads to achievement of your full potential. Last but not least, every facility that makes you enjoy learning shall be at your disposal.
We are confident that you will excel in this program and wish you all the best.

International equivalence |
The academic program is organized over three years (six semesters). Successful completion of this program requires:
Students receive credits for their class time and for their work outside of class. The schedule for this program encompasses:
The American equivalence is based on the Carnegie system. A semi-annual Carnegie loan is worth 45 hours. For a clinical internship, a Carnegie semester credit is worth 60 hours. Regarding the European equivalence, one ETCS (European Credit Transfer System) credit point corresponds to 30 hours of work. For clinical internships, an ETCS credit is equivalent to 45 hours. |

PROFESSIONAL CAREER
Generally midwives may work in health facilities such as hospitals or in the community.
Hospital midwives are midwives who are based in a hospital maternity unit, a birth center or midwife led unit, and they staff the antenatal clinic, labor ward, and postnatal wards. Community midwives often work in teams or individually and provide a degree of continuity of care. In pregnancy they see pregnant women either at home or at a clinic. They attend and support home birth. After giving birth either at home or in a hospital, community midwives they make visits at home for postnatal care of the mother and the baby. |
