SUMMARY OF THE PROGRAM
This program is designed to equip you with the knowledge, skills and attitudes that constitute the base for a set of entry-level competencies required to practice as anesthesia nurse. The anesthesia nurse is a highly trained medical professional and an essential member of the anesthesia care team. This team uses pharmaceutical agents to induce a reversible state of amnesia, analgesia, loss of responsiveness, loss of skeletal muscle reflexes or decreased stress response, or all simultaneously. This allows patients to undergo surgery and other procedures without the distress and pain they would otherwise experience.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PROGRAM
We welcome you wholeheartedly to the Bachelor of Anesthesia Nursing Program at the College of Health Sciences.
This program is tailored to equip you with knowledge, skills and attitudes that will make you a competent anesthesia nurse. You will learn how to check and prepare the anesthetic machine, intravenous drugs, intravenous therapy administration equipment, devices to maintain the patient’s airway and equipment to assess and monitor the patients’ condition whilst under anesthesia. You will also be trained to undertake complete preoperative patient assessment including physical examination and diagnostic tests.
During operation you will be prepared to assist in inducing and maintaining adequate anesthesia, establishing and securing an airway, putting the patient in the right position and monitoring of patient’s vital signs, anesthesia depth and body temperature. You will also be trained to take blood samples for analysis and acquire transfusion fluids and equipment.
After operation you learn how to escort patients to the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU). You will be competent to undertake complete post-operative assessment, monitoring and care. You will be prepared to adequately respond to various anesthesia complications and emergencies. You will also master procedures for advanced cardiac life support (ACLS) and critical care.
We have designed the course in a way that offers you the most interactive, informal and encouraging environment conducive to learning. You will be encouraged to think critically, to seek knowledge yourself and to translate theory into practice.
Our curriculum is based on the art and science of helping you learn. The principles of our educational philosophy are that you are a self-directed learner, have rich experiences and knowledge on which to draw and desire to learn to better handle real-life situations. In this regard we see education as a process that builds up competence and leads to achievement of your full potential.
Last but not least, every facility that makes you enjoy learning shall be at your disposal.
We are confident that you will excel in this program and wish you all the best.

International equivalence |
The academic program is organized over three years (six semesters). Successful completion of this program requires:
Students receive credits for their class time and for their work outside of class. The schedule for this program encompasses:
The American equivalence is based on the Carnegie system. A semi-annual Carnegie loan is worth 45 hours. For a clinical internship, a Carnegie semester credit is worth 60 hours. Regarding the European equivalence, one ETCS (European Credit Transfer System) credit point corresponds to 30 hours of work. For clinical internships, an ETCS credit is equivalent to 45 hours. |

PROFESSIONAL CAREER
Anesthesia nurses work in the same environments as anesthesiologists, including hospital operating rooms, labor and delivery units, critical and intensive care floors, outpatient centers, offices of dentists, ophthalmologists, plastic surgeons and podiatrists, pain management clinics and in management. In many remote areas, anesthesia nurses are the only providers of anesthesia. Anesthesia nurses work closely with patients and their families to ensure proper care and comfort and, as such, are regarded with respect by nursing and medical personnel.
