A BRIGHT DECADE IS AWAITING OUR NURSE GRADUATES IN MOROCCO AND ABROAD
Experts expect a very promising decade for nurses in Morocco with more jobs available for nurses than ever before. Hospitals will have harsh competition for hiring qualified nurses through attractive salaries and employment benefits. Why? The answer is simple; there are not enough qualified nurses to feed the expected high growth rates in the healthcare industry in Morocco.
The government is preparing legislations to open the way for the private sector to invest in the health sector. More hospitals and health facilities are expected to operate in the coming decade. New facilities will logically require a significant number nurses who are currently not available.
The total number of nurses in Morocco is less than 30 thousands, which is equivalent to one-third of the current need. This number is expected even to decline since two thirds of these nurses are retiring in the coming decade.
While all nurses have bright job outlooks going forward, the demand is going to be highest for nurse specialists. Why? Because, more and more, hospital patients are only those who are very sick and require complex, technology-dependent care. That means pretty much any nurse will need this unique set of knowledge, skills, and abilities. Further, more and more hospitals will tend to provide specialized care in the future and will require specialized personnel.
“It is so hard to find a nurse who is qualified and capable to provide specialist care in areas like oncology, cardiology, neonatology, dialysis and intensive care. Simply, there are not specialist educational programs for nurses and we have to spend years teaching general nurses for doing the job,” says the director of an oncology center in Casablanca.
“We would be willing to pay very attractive salaries for a nurse specialized in cardiac catheterization, double or triple what we pay for a general nurse. But unfortunately such nurses are not available” adds the director of a cardiology center in Casablanca.
Reading the future trends in health care delivery in Morocco points out very clearly to the fact that specialist nurses will be highly demanded and generously paid. Currently, such a career development is blocked for nurses within the current educational system.
The College of Health Sciences is opening up together with its international partners the specialization path to nurses. The specialization track is a one-year program encompassing the following specialties.
